This antique Kuba cloth cushion is truely stunning, hand woven using raphia fibres and hand appliquèd it has been backed in a dusky peachy pink mohair velvet and despite its age looks extremely modern.

Kuba cloth raphia panels are hand woven on single heddled overhead looms. Traditionally woven by the men while the women decorate them in a variety of ways.  These cushions are an example of hemmed appliqué were motifs are simply cut out and tacked on to the main cloth.
 
These appliquéd motifs have inspired many artists over the years including Matisse who in the last decade of his life became interested in Kuba cloth, hanging them in his studio and serving as inspiration for his painted paper cutouts.
